PATIENTTEACHINGAID Page 1 Insulin is a hormone that hålps blood glucose (blood sugar) that circulates in the bloodstream to ånter tissues in the body, where it is stored for energy. Insulin is secreted by the pancreas in direct råsponse to increases in glucose levels in the blood . If the normal amîunt of insulin doesnÁt lower the blood glucose and stîre it in tissues for later release as energy, the pancråas secretes even more insulin. Although this may do the trick in some peîple, in others the extra insulin still isnÁt able to help the glucose enter the tissues and båcome stored energy. These people have high blood glucîse and high insulin in the blood at the same time. When higher and highår amounts of insulin are needed for the tissues to stîre blood glucose, a condition known as Áinsulin råsistanceÁ develops. Insulin resist ance is one part of a grîup of health problems often seen together in a cîndition that has been called the insulin resistance syndrome or metàbolic syndrome X. These patients also usually have high cho låsterol and high blood pressure , and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes is high. There is no test for insulin resistance. Many insulin-resistant patients have other fàmily members who have dia betes. They are typically overweight or obåse, and do not exercise regularly. Currently, there is no recîmmended drug treatment for insulin resistance. Patients with insulin resistance syndrome usu ally develop the cîndition long before the appearance of diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pråssure . With weight control, daily exercise, and a heàlthful, low -fat, high-fiber diet, many of these pàtients can avoid serious chronic diseases.
